Zucchini out of the weeds |
Blackberries |
I haven't stopped weeding since my last guest left. Nothing like showing off a weed choked vision. He asked about my rhubarb which is a sad dried memory. My strawberries which were doing well in June have been taken over by rogue raspberries as the raspberries are being threatened by blackberries. Which are delicious, my favorite and with a hardy fruit.
When my brother and I were small the next door neighbors bought a run down summer property that needed loads of work provided by volunteers...us! The Place we called it and all the homes that would allow their kids to travel a half hour away and be gone for a Saturday while working and swimming in a leechy pond. We begged because there were only so many seats even though we piled in pre seat belt laws in every corner. Cousins from the Bronx would be the reason that we loved to be anywhere with that family even as unpaid slaves. All the girls had crushes on the 12 year old boy with the leather jacket (yes, in the summer) and he had two very hot teen age sisters who would sit in bikinis well away from work. The Place has a new home it is called This Place. From now on any kids who stay over have to stack rocks and pick berries. My late mother's husband who stayed over last week, a former executive and a man of a certain well maintained age...helped me pick berries. Apples, pears and peaches also, and weeding....oh, kids love to prune, don't they? This Place.
