Heirloom seeds are especially valuable as they retain traits that were nurtured in your garden. My aunt and uncle are celebrating 50 years together surrounded by a wonderful and stable family. They held good jobs, influenced endless children, active in community, church, sports and the arts. Travel included trips to family Ireland and Poland, retirement in gorgeous Maine and Florida. I toast their incredible success and marriage!
Another, more universal anniversary, happens next week-end. Many people we knew worked at one time in the downtown towers of NYC. Several temporary office jobs of mine had me employed there for weeks. Trying to get to the ground on a break was impossible but the cafeteria was in a beautiful atrium with incredible views. My husband worked at Dinosaurs Alive, a full scale robotic creation. It was an eerie treat to walk through pre-opening as he turned them on. The exhibit was off the Winter Garden, that beautiful, dusty, glass entrance with palm trees that survived the attack. I used to roller-blade down from Chelsea everyday and on Sundays the financial district became skateboard world. All pre-Chelsea Piers. We, as a neighborhood group, were meeting with the developers to ensure eight feet of green remained around the entire island of Manhattan so you could bike, skate, walk the entire perimeter starting with the old piers. New York covets its outdoor space. Central Park was my stomping grounds for years, then I thought I would never stop haunting the Cloisters. The high line is such a marvel, as is, of course, the now old Chelsea Piers.
Proximity and life-style had me cross paths with Father Mychal Judge. St. Francis was between then work and residence and I used to escape to the beautiful garden that opens to the stars, a candle-lighted, oasis, a block from Madison Square Garden. Father Judge found me passed-out in the alcove and suggested gently that I go to the book store which is not a book store at all. No doubt that his life was a success.
So, sew, sow.
Happy Labor Day, work it out~!
